  Board of Directors

GAO is governed by a Board of Directors elected from, and by, the voting membership; i.e. those members who have paid an annual membership fee. The Board has an authorized strength of eleven members, though some seats may remain vacant at the pleasure of the Board. Board Members are elected for a term of three years, with at least one-third of the Board being elected each year. In addition to the members elected, the Board may appoint individuals to serve on the Board of Directors in advisory capacities. Such advisory directors may be invited to attend and participate in meetings and deliberations of the Board of Directors, but they shall not be entitled to any vote. The Supervisor, Georgetown Animal Services or his/her designee shall be an advisory director. Following the election of new Board members in November, the newly elected Board meets prior to January 1 and elects from among the Board, a president, vice-president, secretary, and treasurer who serve the following year. Officers serve a one-year term and are elected/reelected each year.

  Community Involvement

GAO is active in the Georgetown and surrounding community in several ways. Throughout the year, GAO volunteers can be found at community events, such as Market Days on the Square, Red Poppy Festival, and Christmas Stroll where volunteers man the Animal Shelter adoption trailer that is used to showcase animals available for adoption. New store openings, events in San Gabriel Park, and special local events wherever people gather are other opportunities for GAO to ‘take animals to the public’ for adoption.

Several GAO member volunteers also perform duties at the Georgetown Animal Shelter, thereby ensuring that important tasks are performed when staffing levels at the Shelter might otherwise cause those tasks to not be done. Refer to Volunteer Opportunities to learn more.

“Through its fundraising efforts, GAO makes monetary and in-kind donations to the Animal Shelter and other animal welfare groups to provide special medical assistance, supplies, and materials that contribute to the care of the animals. Fundraising is accomplished through the generosity of the general public who wish to help in improving the lives and plight of sheltered animals and through grant funds sought by GAO from philanthropic foundations and organizations which support low-cost spay & neuter programs and other activities that aid unwanted and sheltered animals.

GAO is proud of its Free Spay & Neuter Certificate Program through which countless unwanted puppies and kittens have been prevented. The short-range benefit of this program is the birth prevention of unwanted litters, and the number of stray and oft-times neglected and abused animals. The longer range benefit is the financial savings to the community when, we believe, it will be unnecessary to spend tax dollars to build more holding kennels at the Animal Shelter.

Throughout the month, GAO accepts requests for free spay & neuter certificates from residents of Georgetown and the surrounding area. While having an intended focus on helping low-income, unemployed, and senior citizens who may find the cost of the procedure beyond their means, GAO accepts and considers requests from all citizens in the area without respect to age, sex, color, national origin, or economic status. GAO reserves the right to suspend the program or alter the criteria for selection of candidates when funds become insufficient and the number of certificates issued must be limited.
