GAO is pleased to announce that the spay & neuter program offered to individuals in the community has been named The Alice Briggs Memorial Spay & Neuter Program as a memorial to one of our founding members, Mrs. Alice Briggs of Georgetown. Throughout her life, Alice had a deep love for animals of all kinds, and had a special sense of caring for those injured and lame. She volunteered countless hours at the Georgetown Animal Shelter, and in 2000 joined a small band of animal lovers to found Georgetown Animal Outreach. Sadly, we lost Alice this past summer, but her deep sense of compassion and dedication to the animals will long be remembered by those who knew and worked with her. We’re proud to name this very worthwhile program in Alice’s honor and memory

Spay
& Neuter to Solve the Pet Overpopulation Problem
|
| What
Can GAO Do? |
Like
almost every community, Georgetown, Texas,
battles the pet overpopulation problem. Often,
the Animal Shelter is full to capacity of animals
that have been turned in by their owner because
they’re
unwanted for a number of stated reasons, and even
more often, animals find their way to the shelter
because they are picked up as strays by Animal
Control. In either case, taxpayers pick up
the tab for the cost of building or expanding
shelter facilities, and the expense of salaries
and supplies
needed to staff and operate the shelter. If unchecked,
the growing population of unwanted pets would require
the expansion on shelter facilities. This expense
can be avoided. |
Georgetown
Animal Outreach is working to alleviate the overpopulation
of unwanted animals by sponsoring a low-cost,
or no-cost, spay & neuter program for residents
of Georgetown and the surrounding area. Funds
to support this program come from donations and
grant funds. Of course, when funds become low
or exhausted, GAO must either limit the number
of procedures available each month, restrict
the qualifications for assistance, or curtail
the program altogether. |
